Builders Cabinet – Proudly serving Chicago and suburbs for more than 35 years

Builders Cabinet was started by Charles Benner, a Metra Rail engineer and his childhood friend, John Anderson, a Chicago Firefighter in the Spring of 1986. They had a common goal, construct quality cabinetry, serve Chicago families, and build a business that could be passed on to a new generation. After many late nights and a lot of sweat, the company grew. As time went on, their children joined the team and began working their way through college on the shop floor. Eventually, Charles bought out his partner and moved the business to Chicago.

As the company grew, it became apparent that Charles’ engineer job was slowing down growth. He needed help. So in the Spring of 1996, Brian Benner, joined once again, and the father-son duo set their sights on helping families around Chicago build their dream kitchens and bathrooms.

The business has served Chicago builders and developers with premium cabinetry constructed right here in our Chicago factory on Western Avenue.

In 2002, a key decision was made that would forever change the Chicago kitchen cabinet and bathroom vanity market. Charles and Brian decided it was time to take out the middleman and sell their premium cabinetry directly to customers – saving them up to 40% versus retail cabinetry. The decision paid off. By 2008, we had grown to building over 2,000 kitchens a year and employed over 85 people, helping support 100’s of Chicago’s very own builders and developers.

Today, we continue to proudly serve the entire Chicago land market. Our kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities are in over 50,000 homes. Families are raising their kids and creating beautiful memories while our products serve them well. And here at Builders Cabinet, the next generation is eagerly awaiting their turn to continue our proud tradition.

We encourage you to stop by a showroom and meet our staff. Take a factory tour. Learn about what makes us different from our competition. We look forward to meeting you and helping you turn your dreams into realities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Unlike most kitchen and bath dealerships who only carry other lines of cabinetry, we are the actual creator and manufacturer of our own cabinets called Orchard Hill Cabinetry.

We manufacture at our factory located at 401 N. Western Ave Chicago, IL. 60612. We employ over 55 people and have over 80,000 sq/ft of manufacturing space. Please come by for a free tour.

There are a couple of ways to go about getting a free estimate. The first, you can stop by one of our two showrooms with your measurements of your kitchen (walls, ceiling ht., plumbing lines, ect.) and we can use your measurements to draw a floorplan out and generate an estimate. The second way is to come into our showroom and meet with a designer. They will help you pick out your styles and color and then come out to your home to get measurements and then work up drawings and get you a free quote.

It all depends on the space. A smaller kitchen obviously uses less cabinets and is less expensive. The same goes when deciding what kind of door style, wood species and color. There are all kinds of variables that go into pricing out a kitchen.

Traditionally, American manufacturers have built cabinets using a framed construction.  The cabinet box is constructed with a 1-1/2″ face frame that is attached to the front of the box.  This allows for the cabinets to be attached via the face frame. Below is a picture of both a framed and frameless cabinet.

The European way of manufacturing kitchen and bathroom cabinets is called a frameless construction.  The bathroom or kitchen cabinets are made the same, however, instead of attaching the face frame to the front of the cabinet, the box itself is the face frame.

There are some advantages to this method of construction.  The first, when the kitchen is completed, all you see are the doors and drawer fronts.  This achieves a “full overlay look”  which in my opinion is a much more desirable look.  True, on a framed cabinet, you can also manufacture the doors to be full overlay but usually with an upcharge.

The second benefit of the frameless construction is that you do not have that center stile coming down in the middle of your cabinet when there are two doors on the cabinet.  Lastly, you get more space for your plates and glasses and your drawers tend to be larger because of the space you are saving by not having the face frame attached.

Below is another diagram showing the differences in a framed and frameless cabinet.

We like to describe ourselves as a semi-custom cabinet shop. However, the word custom comes up a lot and if you can draw it, we will most likely be able to build it. So yes, we can make custom cabinets.

We primarily ship to the six county area of Northern Illinois. Most of our business is done in the city of Chicago. We will ship as far North as Milwaukee and also to the West side of Michigan.

We ship our cabinetry on our own trucks. We will walk in each cabinet to your dwelling and have them properly stored for your contractor. All cabinetry is wrapped in cardboard to protect it during the shipping process.

Builders Cabinet Supply was started in 1986.

Our general lead times vary depending on the type of cabinet as well as the season. But generally, we run anywhere from 6-8 weeks from time of order.

Yes. Please see our “Our Guarantee” section.

We have two conveniently located showrooms. One in the heart of Chicago and one in the Western Suburbs.

So much goes into designing, building and delivering a kitchen or bathroom. The standard process is for the customer to come into one of our showrooms and meet with a designer to design your kitchen or bath. You will then pick out your door style and color. The designer will then come out to your home and take final measurements. He or she will then generate the drawings needed for your approval and provide you a free estimate. If everything looks good, you will place a deposit down for your order and we will begin ordering the materials needed for your kitchen or bath. After it is completely built, we will schedule for delivery and accept final payment.

We accept checks, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards.

All of our color samples are available upon request at our showrooms except for custom colors.

We offer over 1,200 Sherwin Williams colors. We are confident you can find one to satisfy your needs.

Please be aware that water is the enemy of cabinetry. We ask that all cabinetry be cleaned with a lightly damp cloth with a small dab of dish soap to clean the doors or inside of the cabinetry. Do not use any furniture cleaners or abrasive soaps on the cabinetry.

This is the beauty of us building your kitchen or bath. If you require just one door because your child decided to run his big wheel into the door, we can order you just the one door and not a whole cabinet.

We do carry other cabinet lines, however, 90% of our sales is our own Orchard Hill cabinet line. We also carry Homecrest, Starmark and Merrilat Cabinetry.

We believe that the end user should pay the same as a builder, remodeler or designer. This is why we are able to offer such low prices on our cabinetry because the retail customer is already getting the trade discount.
