General FAQ

There are a couple of ways to go about getting a free estimate. The first, you can stop by one of our two showrooms with your measurements of your kitchen (walls, ceiling ht., plumbing lines, ect.) and we can use your measurements to draw a floorplan out and generate an estimate. The second way is to come into our showroom and meet with a designer. They will help you pick out your styles and color and then come out to your home to get measurements and then work up drawings and get you a free quote.

It all depends on the space. A smaller kitchen obviously uses less cabinets and is less expensive. The same goes when deciding what kind of door style, wood species and color. There are all kinds of variables that go into pricing out a kitchen.

Traditionally, American manufacturers have built cabinets using a framed construction. The cabinet box is constructed with a 1-1/2″ face frame that is attached to the front of the box. This allows for the cabinets to be attached via the face frame. Below is a picture of both a framed and frameless cabinet.

Drawing of Frameless and Face Frame Custom Kitchen Cabinets

The European way of manufacturing kitchen and bathroom cabinets is called a frameless construction. The bathroom or kitchen cabinets are made the same, however, instead of attaching the face frame to the front of the cabinet, the box itself is the face frame.

There are some advantages to this method of construction. The first, when the kitchen is completed, all you see are the doors and drawer fronts. This achieves a “full overlay look” which in my opinion is a much more desirable look. True, on a framed cabinet, you can also manufacture the doors to be full overlay but usually with an upcharge.

The second benefit of the frameless construction is that you do not have that center stile coming down in the middle of your cabinet when there are two doors on the cabinet. Lastly, you get more space for your plates and glasses and your drawers tend to be larger because of the space you are saving by not having the face frame attached.

Below is another diagram showing the differences in a framed and frameless cabinet.

We like to describe ourselves as a semi-custom cabinet shop. However, the word custom comes up a lot and if you can draw it, we will most likely be able to build it. So yes, we can make custom cabinets.

We primarily ship to the six county area of Northern Illinois. Most of our business is done in the city of Chicago. We will ship as far North as Milwaukee and also to the West side of Michigan.

We ship our cabinetry on our own trucks. We will walk in each cabinet to your dwelling and have them properly stored for your contractor. All cabinetry is wrapped in cardboard to protect it during the shipping process.

Builders Cabinet was started in 1986.

Our general lead times vary depending on the type of cabinet as well as the season. But generally, we run anywhere from 6-8 weeks from time of order.

Yes. It will be included in the contract when you are ready to order!

We have two conveniently located showrooms. One in the heart of Chicago and one in the Western Suburbs.

So much goes into designing, building and delivering a kitchen or bathroom. The standard process is for the customer to come into one of our showrooms and meet with a designer to design your kitchen or bath. You will then pick out your door style and color. The designer will then come out to your home and take final measurements. He or she will then generate the drawings needed for your approval and provide you a free estimate. If everything looks good, you will place a deposit down for your order and we will begin ordering the materials needed for your kitchen or bath. After it is completely built, we will schedule for delivery and accept final payment.

We accept checks, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards.

All of our color samples are available upon request at our showrooms except for custom colors.

We offer over 1,200 Sherwin Williams colors. We are confident you can find one to satisfy your needs.

Please be aware that water is the enemy of cabinetry. We ask that all cabinetry be cleaned with a lightly damp cloth with a small dab of dish soap to clean the doors or inside of the cabinetry. Do not use any furniture cleaners or abrasive soaps on the cabinetry.

This is the beauty of us building your kitchen or bath. If you require just one door because your child decided to run his big wheel into the door, we can order you just the one door and not a whole cabinet.

We do carry other cabinet lines, however, 90% of our sales is our own Orchard Hill cabinet line. We also carry Homecrest, Starmark and Merrilat Cabinetry.

We believe that the end user should pay the same as a builder, remodeler or designer. This is why we are able to offer such low prices on our cabinetry because the retail customer is already getting the trade discount.

Bathroom FAQ

Everything you need to know before you buy

If you're shopping for bathroom cabinets in the Chicago area, you're in the right place. This FAQ breaks down what you really need to know with clear answers to the most common questions. Whether you're upgrading a powder room or doing a full bathroom remodel, here's what you should keep in mind.

You’ve got options. A standard bathroom vanity is about 32 inches tall, 21 inches deep, and ranges from 24 to 72 inches wide depending on how much storage and counter space you want. Floating vanities (the kind mounted to the wall) tend to be a bit shorter but can be customized. Need something specific? We offer custom sizing so your cabinets fit perfectly, even in tight or oddly shaped bathrooms.

Yes, absolutely. If your space has quirks—think sloped ceilings, off-center plumbing, or tight corners—custom cabinets can make all the difference. Custom lets you choose the exact dimensions, layout, finish, hardware, and even the number of drawers. In our showrooms, you can work directly with a designer to create custom bathroom cabinets that check every box on your wish list.

You want something that can stand up to steam and splashes. These are the most popular and practical options:

  • Solid wood: Gorgeous, but it needs a proper finish to resist moisture.
  • Plywood: Strong and durable. Great for humid spaces when sealed well.
  • MDF (medium-density fiberboard): Smooth and budget-friendly. Less resistant to water unless sealed or painted.
  • Thermofoil: A vinyl coating over MDF. Water-resistant and easy to clean.
  • Laminate: Durable and affordable. There is tons of design flexibility.
Our team will help you pick the right material based on your style, budget, and bathroom conditions.

It depends on your taste and space. Here are the big categories:

  • Freestanding vanities: Traditional and versatile. Great for storage.
  • Wall-mounted (floating) vanities: Sleek, modern, and perfect for small bathrooms.
  • Corner vanities: Space-saving and smart in tight bathrooms.
  • Double-sink vanities: Ideal for shared bathrooms.
You’ll also want to think about the cabinet finish, hardware, sink style, and countertop material. We’ll walk you through all of it during your consultation.

You can DIY if you’re confident with tools and measuring. But in most cases, we recommend hiring a pro. Bathroom cabinet installation involves leveling, anchoring, and plumbing alignment. A small mistake could lead to water damage or crooked doors. We offer installation services, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

If you choose in-stock styles, you can usually take them home right away or schedule quick delivery. Custom cabinets take longer, anywhere from six to eight weeks, from design approval to delivery. We’ll give you a timeline up front so you can plan your remodel or new build without surprises.

They can be. But they don’t have to be. Here’s a general price breakdown:

  • Stock cabinets: The most affordable. Limited styles and sizes.
  • Semi-custom: More flexibility. Mid-range pricing.
  • Custom: Designed just for you. It's a higher price, but it's worth it if you want a perfect fit.
We work with a range of budgets and offer design guidance to make the most of what you’re spending.

Yes. A bathroom update is one of the most valuable home upgrades. Stylish, high-quality cabinets make your bathroom more functional and attractive, which buyers notice. Even if you’re not selling, new cabinets make daily routines feel better.

Easy steps go a long way:

  • Wipe up the water quickly. Don’t let puddles sit on the surface.
  • Use gentle cleaners. Skip anything harsh or abrasive.
  • Avoid slamming doors or drawers.
  • Open windows or run a fan to keep humidity under control.
Ask us about cabinet finishes that are made for durability. Some even have built-in antimicrobial protection.

Locker FAQ

Everything you need to know about custom lockers

Are you searching for lockers that actually work for your home? Whether it’s for the mudroom, laundry area, a kid’s bedroom, or your entryway, custom lockers can make staying organized a lot easier. Below, we’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions we hear from homeowners about choosing lockers, customizing them, and making the most of their storage potential.

Custom lockers are built specifically for your space, style, and storage needs. Unlike store-bought cubbies or mass-produced locker units, we design your locker system from scratch. That means you can pick the height, width, number of sections, finishes, hooks, drawers, and even charging stations if you need them. Our custom lockers blend into your home, not stand out awkwardly.

We install lockers in a variety of places, but the most popular spots include:

  • Mudrooms: A go-to spot for jackets, shoes, backpacks, and sports gear
  • Laundry rooms: Great for sorting clothes, storing cleaning supplies, and housing hampers
  • Entryways or hallways: Keep things neat and welcoming with everyday storage
  • Bedrooms: Ideal for kids who need a place to stash toys, books, or school supplies
  • Basements or garages: Lockers here can hold tools, outdoor gear, or seasonal items
If there’s clutter, a custom locker can probably solve it.

Yes, and we do it all the time. Our custom lockers are built to match or complement the style of your home. That means matching wood species, stains, paints, trim details, and hardware finishes. Whether you want something classic, modern, rustic, or totally unique, we’ll help you design it to fit in seamlessly.

The beauty of custom design is flexibility. Some popular add-ons include:

  • Hooks and open shelves for quick access
  • Doors for concealed storage
  • Built-in drawers or cubbies for smaller items
  • Bench seating with storage underneath
  • Charging ports and lighting
  • Nameplates for families or team members
We’ve even added pet supply zones and shoe dryers. If you can think of it, we’ll try to build it.

It’s simple. Here’s how we usually work with our customers:

  1. Consultation: We meet with you in-store to understand your space and goals
  2. Design: Our team draws up locker ideas that reflect your style and storage needs
  3. Approval: You review the design, make any edits, and choose your materials
